One Salinas Youth Arts Festival
March 29,
11 am – 4pm
in Oldtown Salinas
including
student performances, sidewalk art, and many other fun surprises
| The point of
Artsong is to overcome negative stereotypes. Teens are
fighting to change public perception. We hold a very creative,
colorful art show presented by numerous high school
students, with art from many community members. The Artsong program has visual and performing art by
local students who wish to set an excellent example for
the community.
“Who are we?” they
ask on the front of a t-shirt they created for ArtSong...
“We are Artistic, Creative, Dedicated, Innovative,
Unique, Determined, Bright, Interested, Civic-Minded,
Intense, Culturally Aware, the Future!” is the answer on
the back.

Teens who have
participated in Artsong learn many important social
skills and great work habits, such as communication
skills, design skills (such as making T-shirts), gallery
installation and a lesson in business technology.
Students also get the chance to present PowerPoint
documents practicing their public speaking skills.
The
students have presented in front of the Salinas Union High School
District board
of trustees and the mayor and city council. As a reward
for the outstanding efforts, the teens in Artsong are
able to receive a substantial amount of
community service hours towards their graduation requirements. |

This is the fourth year
Salinas high school students have been
organizing the Salinas Union High School District art exhibition
at Hartnell College.
Starting in February,
students meet weekly, learning all tasks related to organizing a
community event.
